Power Hour and Enrichment Hour
Sacred Heart students tutor youth at Siena Youth Center, in the North Fair Oaks area of Redwood City, after school every Tuesday from 3 to 4: 30 pm. Mr. Caroll takes a van of volunteers from Sacred Heart to the youth center. The volunteering grows every week as the word spreads and more students want to get involved. The tutoring program benefits the youth as well as the volunteer as the bond between the children and tutors strengthens and becomes a friendship. The volunteers hear about this service learning opportunity because tutoring opportunities are always presented in the daily bulletin and announced in school assemblies.
Aside of turoring provided by SHP on Tuesdays youth are bused to SHP to take part in fine arts and crafts classes led by students and coordinated by various SHP faculty. Youth are engaged in dance and art classes that students lead to SYC youth.
To reach out to the broader community, support the developing youth, and to educate to the building of community as a Christian value. We want to instill confidence in their young minds.
How To Get Involved
To get involved, go to the service learning office in the Homer building and ask for more details and a permission slip for the Siena Youth Center. Wait by the flag pole near the main building on any Tuesday if you want to participate. Vans leave ten minutes after school. Everyone is welcome!
