Grupo Danza Colibrí is a community group whose mission is to reaffirm the cultural identity of children, youth, and families in our community through the exploration of traditional and contemporary music, literacy and dance. It also aims for strengthening relations between our community and groups of other cultural traditions, links between generations, networks between families in other to weave stronger communities. Through the music and dance experience Grupo Danza Colibrí offers the opportunity for developing empathy, community support, respect, and appreciation of cultural differences.
There are three mains aspects in our program
- Mexican Folkloric Dance Group “Grupo Danza Colibrí”.
- Presentations and workshops of music, dance, and other activities related to art and culture available to all.
- Cultural exchange and interaction with artists from large cities as well as from small towns of some localities in Latin America.
Grupo Danza Colibrí embraces diverse aspects of diffusion and approach of popular art and culture to the Latin American community of the North Fair Oaks area. Due to the lack of these activities that reflect and consolidate the cultural identity of our community, GDC offers classes, recreational workshops and formal activities of instruction and exposure to Mexican popular music, ethnic dance and some other art activities that are related to the Latin American culture. The activities and classes of GDC are either at very low cost and available to most of the low income families of North Fair Oaks or completely free. The classes and workshops range from a constant and progressive practice of dance and/or music with visible results in performances that are free to our community. GDC participates and/or organizes various events inside and outside of Redwood City as well as small workshops where children and adults explore art in a relaxed and fun non-competitive way that a specialist in its area of the performing arts has to offer to the community.
